Caroline Grier with 10 saves for the Shorewomen, while Jackie Chen turned away one shot.

That is all for today. Heading back to Chestertown in a little bit.

This wraps up my four trips in seven days with men's soccer, women's soccer and field hockey. I want to thank them all for being so nice to me.

I also want to thank Jill for her hospitality and I had fun hanging out with her in the office prior to the match!

Good day all!

Ursinus 3-0

The Bears made it 3-0 in the 54th minute when Jess Gunzelman netted her second goal of the day off of a rebound in the box.

On The Road With Women's Soccer

Good afternoon everybody, how are you today? (This is Chris "Mad Dog" Russo's famous opening from Mike and the Mad Dog radio show)

We are now just north of Wilmington as the women's soccer team and I head up to Collegeville, PA to take on Ursinus in a Centennial Conference match.

I will be back later on with more blogging from the road!

Saturday, September 23, 2006

Ursinus 3-0 -- Final

The game has just concluded and #5 Ursinus downs WC, 3-0, in the Centennial Conference opener for the Shorewomen. Elena Nicholoff made 13 saves for WC and some of them were some very tough saves.

WC returns to action on Tuesday with a trip to McDaniel in conference action.

I want to thank Jill for her hospitality today.

That is all for now from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I hope you have enjoyed my blogging today from Collegeville. Have a great weekend everybody!

Ursinus 3-0

Molly Stevens made it 3-0 Bears on a rebound shot with 4:48 remaining in the game. Ursinus almost it 4-0, but it hit the post, the second of the day for the Bears.

Timeout WC

Will use this time out to post a blog. WC calls a timeout with 9:25 to go with Ursinus up 2-0. Nicholoff just robbed Jess Rogers with a kick save and a beauty from point blank range.

Second Half Underway

The second half just started with Megan Rainey hitting the ball to begin play.

Ursinus 2-0 -- Halftime

The Bears lead 2-0 at halftime. WC had two chances with about 10 minutes to go in the first half, but were not able to get on the board. Nicholoff made several key saves to keep the score at 2-0.

I want to wish Drew and men's soccer good luck this afternoon against Muhlenberg.

2-0 Ursinus

At the 10:53 mark, Ursinus made it 2-0 on a goal from Jess Rogers and assisted by Meredith Stabley. The Bears had two chances to make it 3-0 but Nicholoff made two kick saves.

1-0 Ursinus

Ursinus scored 3:51 into the contest on a deflected shot.

Here are today's starters from Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field...

WC: 4-Melanie Ruppert, 7-Molly Gavin, 9-Amy Spadanuta, 12-Lindsey Riley, 14-Megan Rainey, 19-Kristin Ward, 22-Ally Simons, 24-Candace Gaull, 25-Shane Moser, 33-Katie Madron and in goal 31-Elena Nicholoff.

Today's Primer

This is fifth consecutive year the Shorewomen will be playing Ursinus, with the Bears taking all four prior meetings. Ursinus was at one time a Division I field hockey program.

In 2002, Ursinus won a 4-3 shootout in Chestertown. Current assistant coach Laura Scimeca scored in the game on a penalty stroke.

2003 would be the first conference tilt between the two schools with the Bears winning 4-2 in Chestertown. Scimeca also scored in this game, scoring WC's first goal. Current senior Katie Madron made a defensive save in the tilt.

Ursinus grabbed a 2-0 victory in 2004 in Collegeville. Current senior Kristin Ward tallied a defensive save in the game.

Last season back in Chestertown, the Shorewomen fell 6-1. Current junior Rachel Miller netted WC's only goal from current sophomore Amy Spadanuta.

In the next couple of hours we will find out what the 2006 edition of this series has in order.

Good Morning From Ursinus

Good morning everybody, how are you today!? I am at Ursinus College for today's field hockey contest between the Shorewomen and the Bears of Ursinus. This is my second trip with the team in three days as I was with the squad at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Thursday.

The trip took 2 1/2 hours from Chestertown, MD to Collegeville, PA and encompassed three states (Delaware being the third). On the way we listened to U2 and the Rocky Soundtrack. The team woke up from their sleep to the beginning of "Gonna Fly Now." The whole minibus cracked up laughing!

I attended about a half-hour of yesterday's practice and during a break, the team decided to do home run derby, field hockey style. Rachel Miller cracked one at least 70 feet, which was by far the longest ball hit. She would have made David Wright proud! Me being a Mets fan, I'm gonna use comparisons to Mets players.

I will be shortly will with a primer.

2-0 Marymount Final

Dana Zalowski scores on a header off a corner kick from Sonora Majkut in the 55th minute. Marymount wins, 2-0.

Grier finishes with eight saves.

More to come on WashingtonCollegeSports.com when I find an electrical outlet!

1-0 Marymount Halftime

Alisha Parker scored in the 39th minute to give the Saints a 1-0 at the half.

Caroline Grier has five saves for WC.

From Wakefield High School ...

... Marymount's off-campus field. Some bits of news; I don't have an outlet here, so I'm not sure how often I'll be able to post updates, as I'll need to save my battery power for postgame. Also, the game may be starting a little late as our team got a little turned around getting here.

WC/MU Women's Soccer

Here's a little background on tonight's Washington/Marymount women's soccer game before I hit the road later on.

The Shorewomen and Saints should have each other well-scouted, since Marymount was in Chestertown for the season-opening Washington College Kick-Off Classic. Marymount played to a 2-2 tie against Notre Dame (MD) and fell to Wesley, 3-0, in the tournament, while Washington tied with Wesley at 0-0 and beat Notre Dame in overtime, 3-2.

Marymount leads the all-time series between the two teams, 2-1-1, but the two teams haven't met since September 5th, 2001, when they played to a 1-1 tie.

1-0 WC Final

What an thrilling ending here at Immaculata. The Mighty Macs had a chance to tie it on one final direct kick, but Petrucci got his hand on the ball and it deflected off the post and went out as Washington College holds on for a 1-0 victory here at Immaculata tonight. Josh Todd's early goal holds up for the Shoremen, who improve to 4-1 for the first time since 1981.

I want to thank Tom and Patty Canterino (Athletic Director) for their hospitality this evening.

Good night everybody! Time to head back home to Chestertown.

Second Half Underway

The Shoremen almost made it 2-0 just 30 seconds into the second half, but Conor Halesworth's shot was turned away by the Mighty Macs new goalkeeper Stone Gahagan. The match has just entered the 48th minute.

1-0 WC at Hafltime

The Shoremen lead the Mighty Macs 1-0 at halftime from Immaculata. Washington College almost made it 2-0 late in the first half, but Brian Danver's shot from about 25 yards out sailed just high over the goal. WC has outshot Immaculata 8-5 in the first half. Petrucci has made three saves for the Shoremen, while Brian Penagos has turned away one shot so far.

On a side note, the Sports Information Director at Immaculata, Tom Machamer, and WC's head men's soccer coach Drew Hoffman both attended West Chester University and know each other.

Petrucci Comes Up Big

In the 20th minute, Marc Petrucci came out and saved Daniel Ventura's shot from 10 yards out. Still 1-0 WC here at Immaculata.

WC 1-0

The Shoremen struck first. Phil Baker's initial shot rang off the crossbar, but Josh Todd was able to corral the rebound and put it into the lower right corner less than 10 minutes into the match.

Kickoff

The Shoremen-Mighty Macs match has just kicked off. Brian Schultz and Josh Todd with the honors for the Shoremen as they start the contest with the ball.

Good Evening From Immaculata

Good evening everybody from Immaculata University in Suburban Philadelphia. WC looks to improve to 4-1 on the season against the Mighty Macs of Immaculata. Immaculata is playing in a brand new stadium with lights and it is a really nice place. I will be back with more blogs this evening from the commonwealth!

WC Splits In Volleyball

The Shorewomen gained a split (1-1) in the second and final day of the 2006 Maryland Division III Volleyball Tournament. In the opening match against Frostburg State, the Shorewomen fell 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-27). Nanna Kozemchak had 13 kills in just 17 attempts in the match. WC gained the split by sweeping Goucher 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-24) in the second tilt. Goucher led 24-22 in the 3rd set before Mallory Kurtz served eight straight points to wrap up a victory for WC. I hope you enjoyed my blogs. Have a nice weekend all!

Today the volleyball team squares off in day two of the 2006 Maryland Division III Tournament. At 10 am, the Shorewomen take on Frostburg State and at noon, WC will go against Goucher.

I want to take a moment and thank Shawne for all his help and hospitality this weekend.

I will be back to post more later today!

Washington College 3, Hood 0

The Shorewomen won the nightcap to earn a split in day one of the Maryland Division III Tournament by sweeping Hood 3-0 (30-28, 30-23, 30-18). Katherine O'Brien had 12 kills and 14 digs, while Caitlin Ward had 25 assists to pace Washington College. Nanna Kozemchak added 10 kills for WC.

I will be back with more blogs tomorrow from St. Mary's College of Maryland.

To men's and women's soccer, good luck tomorrow in your respective matches!

Salisbury 3, Washington College 0

The Shorewomen fell in three games to Salisbury (19-30, 19-30, 18-30) in their first match in the Maryland Division III Tournament at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Caitlin Ward dished out 23 asssits and Nanna Kozemchak had eight kills. The volleyball squad looks to chalk a W in the win column at 8 pm tonight against Hood. I will be back with more blogs from St. Mary's College of Maryland!

The Trip To St. Mary's College of Maryland

Arrived here in St. Mary's City around 2:30 pm. I normally don't sleep on trips, but today I did. It is a long ways from US 50/US 301 to here in St. Mary's City. The team is getting ready to go against Delmarva Peninsula rival Salisbury in the first match of the Maryland Division III Tournament at 4 pm. At 8 pm, the Shorewomen will go against Hood. On our way down, we passed the field hockey team's bus just past the 50/301 merger going toward the Bay Bridge.

I want to wish Rachel, Laura and the field hockey team good luck this afternoon at Mary Washington.

Part II Of The Return Trip, The Finale

Back in Chestertown now. Stopped to get dinner at Wawa.

The best part of the return was the players singing "Jack and Diane!" That was awesome.

I had a blast with Louie, Embrey and the volleyball ladies this weekend. Hope you enjoyed my blogs everybody.

Good night!

Today's Matches and Part I Of The Return Trip

The Shorewomen split their two matches today. WC downed Eastern Mennonite, 3-0, in the first match today before falling in five sets to Lycoming. Katherine O'Brien had 39 kills in the two tilts today. The win over Eastern Mennonite was the first triumph of the season for WC Volleyball.

We are now in Westminster, MD (the home of Centennial Conference rival McDaniel) on our way back to Chestertown. I enjoyed my time in Gettysburg, but happy to be going back to Chestertown.

I want to thank the sports info staff at Gettysburg, Eric and John, for their help and hospitality this weekend. Prior to my work today, I helped Eric taking stuff to the pressbox for Gettysburg's football game today. This is what I love about the sports info business, everybody's willing to help each other out when needed.

Congrats to Drew and men's soccer on their win today 1-0!

I will be back for another blog, time to get some food!

Good Morning From Gettysburg

Good morning everybody! How are you today?

I just finished my breakfast (bagels, banana and OJ for those of you interested) and decided to write my first blog of the day while the team eats their first meal of the day.

The Shorewomen have Eastern Mennonite (noon) and Lycoming (2 pm) today as they look to win a couple of matches in the second and final day.

We will be leaving the hotel shortly and go to the college for some volleyball! I will be back with some more blogs later today. GOOD LUCK SHOREWOMEN!

To Drew and men's soccer, good luck too at Shenandoah!

Catholic 3, WC 0 and Moravian 3, WC 0

The Shorewomen dropped two matches this evening to Catholic and Moravian. Against Catholic, WC jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game two, but could not hold on. In the Moravian match in game two, Washington College needed just two more points for victory in the game, but Moravian scored the last four points to thwart the Shorewomen's hopes. Katherine O'Brien had 26 kills and 25 digs in the two matches, while Caitlin Ward totaled 56 assists and 18 digs.

Following the match, I went to Eric's office and said goodbye to him for the evening.

After we left the campus, we went to Subway, but it closes at 9 and we arrived around 9:15. A restaurant closing at 9 in a college town? Unusual if you ask me. So we ordered Domino's on the way to the hotel and there will be little if any leftovers from that!

Well, that is all for this Friday evening. I will be back tomorrow for some more blogging from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Pre-Match

The Shorewomen are currently doing lines and sitting at the scorer's table in the Catholic-Moravian match, the two other teams in the pool.

As for me, I got a chance to catch up with the sports info staff here at Gettysburg, Eric (SID) and John (Asst. SID).

The bus ride was a little under 2 1/2 hours and when we got into Gettysburg, we saw some of the battlefields from the Civil War. One of the most important battles of the Civil War was fought here 143 years ago, along with one of the most famous speeches in US History by Abraham Lincoln. The Gettysburg Address.

I will be back with more stuff later in the day from Historic Gettysburg, PA!

On The Road With Volleyball

This is my first blog of the weekend with the volleyball team as we going to Gettysburg for the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic. We are now on I-97 between Annapolis and Baltimore. This is my first time on I-97! Fortunately the crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was painless. Fortunately too we were not going East/North on US 50/301 as bricks were splattered all across the lanes going in that direction. Tonight the team has matches against Catholic (5 pm) and Moravian (7 pm). Good luck Shorewomen!!!

3-0 Rowan Final

The Profs come away with the three-goal win. The Shorewomen are off until next Wednesday, when they will play at Notre Dame (MD).

It's time for me to take care of some postgame duties.

3-0 Rowan - 8:45 2nd

The Shorewomen have had a few breaks going downfield, but the Rowan defense has stopped them before Washington can get into the circle.

3-0 Rowan 21:43 2nd

Miranda scores again, this time off an assist from Susan Massara.

2-0 Rowan 23:38 2nd Half

Danielle Miranda gives the Profs a 2-0 lead with a goal on a redirected shot with 23:38 left in the second. Erin Tideman picked up an assist on the goal.

1-0 Rowan 25:40 2nd Half

Washington calls timeout. The Shorewomen's defense continues to hold, denying Rowan on several penalty corners early in the half.

Second Half Underway

Rowan with the ball to start the second half, going left to right on your computer screen.

O'Brien in at goal to start the second half for Washington.

1-0 Rowan Halftime

McGowan's goal accounts for the only goal of the half. Nicholoff and the Washington defense prevented several Rowan attempts from finding the back of the cage. The Shorewomen picked things up on offense late in the half, recording two penalty corners.

1-0 Rowan 6:10 1st

Rowan still controlling possession, but the Shorewomen are hanging in there.

1-0 Rowan 15:10

Nicholoff has made some nice saves for the Shorewomen, including a diving stop to her right a minute ago.

1-0 Rowan 26:32 1st

Colleen McGowan puts the Profs on the board with a shot from near the top of the circle.

Game Time!

Game begins ... Washington ball.

Starters

WC - Ruppert, Gavin, Spadanuta, Riley, Rainey, Ward, Simons, Gaull, Moser, Madron, Nicholoff (GK)

RU - Bennett, Graham, Toy, Miranda, Cheafsky, McGowan, Ehret, Lipnckey, Massara, Tideman, Cucinotti (GK)

One Hour Until Game Time

We're about an hour from game time and I'm perched high atop John Page Field in the pressbox. Both teams are on the field for warm-ups. The Shorewomen are in their usual all-black road uniforms (with white numbers and maroon trim). The Profs' home unis feature white jerseys with yellow numbers, brown kilts, and yellow socks.

A few gray clouds passed through earlier, but they've cleared out. We're looking at beautiful weather for game time.

Glassboro Greetings

Greetings from sunny Glassboro, NJ. I came up ahead of the team in order to grab an early dinner. The weather here is much the same as it was in Chestertown when I left - scattered coulds, temperatures in the high 70s/low 80s.

Be sure to follow along on the blog during tonight's game!

WC/Rowan Field Hockey: The Story

The Rowan University field hockey team was ranked fifth in final 2005 STX/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll. Rowan went 17-4 in 2005, won the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. Rowan has made 13 appearances in the NCAA Championship Tournament and won the championship in 2002.

It mighty be easy to assume, then, that the Washington College Shorewomen are big underdogs heading into tonight's road game against the Profs. Not so fast.

The Shorewomen's senior class owns a pair of wins over Rowan. The first of those wins was a stunning victory over the then No. 1 ranked and defending National Champion Profs on September 23rd, 2003. The Shorewomen took an early 1-0 lead in the game on a goal by current WC assistant coach Laura Scimeca. The Profs tied the game in the second half, but neither team could score again in the rest of regulation or in two overtime periods, so the game was decided by strokes. The strokeoff was tied 1-1 before Washington's Erin Thomas converted the final stroke to give the Shorewomen the 2-1 win as the sun was setting in Chestertown. Goalie Zina Hense was another Washington star that day, making 20 saves.

The following year, Washington headed to Glassboro for a game on September 21st against the then eighth-ranked Profs. Neither team scored in the first half, but Scimeca found current senior Ally Simons for a goal less than a minute into the second period. Scimeca would later add a goal of her own to give Washington a 2-0 lead. Rowan got on the board with less than two minutes left in the game, bu the Shorewomen held on for the win. Current junior Erin O'Brien made 12 stops in goal for Washington in the game.

Rowan did exact some revenge on the Shorewomen last year as the Profs scored three goals in the first 137 seconds of the game and held a 4-2 lead less than 16 minutes into the game during a 6-2 win in Chestertown on September 20th. Danielle Miranda scored twice for the Profs, while current senior Shane Moser and current sophomore Amy Spadanuta accounted for Washington's goals.

I'll be hitting the road for New Jersey later this afternoon and will be posting updates from the game.

Postgame

My final blog of the evening with the women's soccer team. We stopped at Wendy's following the match and are now on the NJ Turnpike heading back to Chestertown. I enjoyed my first road trip at WC very much. I look forward to my next road trip with women's soccer.

I want to thank Sheila and Jonathan for their hospitality this evening.

Tomorrow night Phil will provide you blogging updates for WC-Rowan field hockey. I want to wish Rachel and her squad good luck!

Rowan 5-1 -- Final

The final horn has just sounded and the Profs net a 5-1 win. Grier made some nice saves in the match and Yarbrough had a one of the nicest chip goals you will ever see. The Shorewomen return to action next Wednesday at 4 pm when they travel to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, to take on Chestnut Hill College.

Time to shut down and head to the bus for the ride home to Chestertown.

5-1 Rowan

The Shorewomen got on the board at the 78:41 mark (79th minute) when Sarah Yarbrough netted her 2nd goal of the season from about 35 yards out on a perfect chip from the right side. In addition to her two goals, she has two assists for six points on the young season. She netted the golden goal on Saturday on a penalty kick 19 seconds into the first overtime on Saturday against The College of Notre Dame.

5-0 Rowan

At the 71:51 mark (72nd minute) Aimee Yerkes headed a ball over Grier's head off of a cross from Kaeleigh Brock.

4-0 Rowan

Rowan made it 4-0 at the 52:53 mark (53rd minute) when Karen Petruno scored on a rebound. Grier made a nice save on Emilie Wilson's initial shot, but the loose ball went to Petruno who put it into the net.

Kickoff To Half Two

The second half is about to kickoff on this pleasant evening here in NJ. Rowan with the ball to start the second half.

3-0 Rowan

Rowan made it 3-0 at the 43:28 mark (44th minute) when Shannon Phillips scored on a failed clear. Grier made a great save on the initial shot, but the ball could not be cleared. It is now halftime here in Glassboro.

2-0 Rowan

The Profs made it 2-0 at the 36:12 mark when Florio stole a clearing and her shot hit the post and went in. The Shorewomen had a good chance with 15 minutes to go in the first half, but the shot from about 25 yards out went wide to the right.

1-0 Rowan

Rowan struck first on a goal by Kaitlyn Florio at the 19:41 mark (or 20th minute). Her shot went off the hands of goalkeeper Caroline Grier. Grier has made some nice saves early in this contest.

Kickoff

The two teams have just kicked off. WC starts the game with the ball with captains Heather Roberts and Christine Chop doing the honors!

Pregame

The Shorewomen are warming up for this evening's tilt. Kickoff is just under 20 minutes on this beautiful evening for women's soccer in Southern New Jersey!

Trip To Rowan

Left at 2 pm from Chestertown to Glassboro, NJ. Crossed the Delaware Memorial Bridge for the first time in my life and to see the expanse of the Delaware River was pretty amazing. I grew up near the source of the Delaware where it is not very wide at all. Quite a difference between 30-40 feet and almost two miles. After getting off the bus I found the Sports Info Office and met Sheila and Jonathan for the first time. Chatted with some of the players as they enjoyed some free time before they had to get ready to prepare for this evening's contest. More to come all!

Blogging from Jersey

Both Jason and myself will be traveling to Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ, this week and posting some blog updates from the road. Jason will be with women's soccer on Wednesday night as the Shorewomen (1-0-1) take on the Profs (1-0). I'll be in Glassboro for the field hockey game Thursday night between the Shorewomen (0-2) and the Profs (2-0).
