WC Loses to the University of the Ozarks 74-57

The Shorewomen fell to the Eagles 74-57 this afternoon in the consolation game of the Tyson Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan College.

LaToya Turner tied a career-high with 21 points. Elise Conway added ten points. Regina Barrett, who had 18 points yesterday, hit one three-point field goal in the game and was held to five points.

Women's Basketball Pre-Game

Hello from courtside at Virginia Wesleyan College, where in four minutes the Shorewomen will play their second basketball game in two days against the University of the Ozarks Eagles.

I will be posting many updates throughout the game, so be sure to keep checking back!

Update from Virginia Beach

Well, it's a little after 10:30 on Saturday morning and we have already gotten up and eaten breakfast. A lot of parents have made the drive down here to Virginia Beach, which is really awesome. It is always nice to have a good following when you are playing games so far from home on the road.

We will be checking out of the hotel at noon, and then we will head straight to Virginia Wesleyan to prepare for the 2 o'clock tip-off against the University of the Ozarks. We were able to catch the Ozarks game against Whittenberg, and they certainly gave them a run for the money, only losing by two points. This afternoons game will definitely be up-beat and exciting.

I will try to post in-game updates here on the blog starting at around 2:00 this afternoon, so stay tuned!

Shoremen Sprint Past Hood

Phew. A fast-paced second half followed by some technical issues while I was working on some post-game stuff.

The Shoremen came alive in the second half tonight, rallying past Hood, 90-81, at the Pride of Maryland Tournament. Kyle Stem (29 points) and Jonathan Webb (27 points) get the headlines - and rightfully so - but I can't say enough about the game Scott Polyniak had tonight - nine points and six rebounds, both career highs, two key steals, and the game-tying lay-up.

Washington rolls onto tomorrow's semifinals at 6:00 at Villa Julie against either Villa Julie or Hood.

Women's Basketball loses first game of weekend in overtime, 79-72.

Washington just lost to Virginia Wesleyan in an exciting overtime game by a score of 79-72. The Shorewomen held a 12 point lead at the half, but the Marlins stormed back and the momentum carried them to the victory.

Greetings from Towson

Checking in from Goucher College, co-site of round one of the first-ever Pride of Maryland Tournament.

Tip time for the Shoremen's men's basketball opener against Hood is just about 90 minutes away. Two-time All-Centennial Conference Honorable Mention forward Jonathan Webb goes up against one of the top scorers in Division III, the Blazers' Santo Provenzano.

I'll try to post a score update during halftime.

State of Basketball

The first-ever Pride of Maryland Tournament, featuring eight of the nine Division III men's basketball teams in the state gets started tonight at Goucher and Johns Hopkins. The Washington College men's basketball team will be playing Hood at 6:00 p.m. at Goucher in the tournament's first round.

Greetings from Virginia Beach

I am on the road with the women's basketball team this weekend as they will be competing in the Tyson Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan here in Virginia Beach, VA.

We left campus at around 5:30 this evening and arrived here at the hotel at 10:30. We traveled on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel to get down here. If you are unfamiliar with the bridge, it is about 14 miles long and goes underground several times. We pulled over at a rest stop about half-way over the bridge. We all got out of our vans and walked out onto a pier. The 50 degree weather with 30-40 mph wind gusts made it an adventure to get to the end of the pier, but we eventually made it and the players got to snap some photos. Hopefully I will get a chance to post those later on this weekend.

Sleep is on the agenda for the rest of the evening before we get up for breakfast and of course, basketball.

Keep checking the blog throughout the weekend for updates.

Hitting the Hardwood, Part 2

The Shoremen Hoopsters open their season in two days at the first-ever Pride of Maryland Tournament, featuring eight of the nine Division III teams in the state. To view the schedule for the entire tournament, click here. Here are some other highlights of the Shoremen's schedule this season:

11/22 v. Salisbury - The battle for Eastern Shore supremacy is also the Shoremen's home opener. Oddly enough, because of the Pride of Maryland Tournament, there is a one-in-four chance that this will be the second game in three days between the Shoremen and the Sea Gulls. Washington has defeated Salisbury each of the past two seasons.

11/30 at Ursinus - The last time the Shoremen were in Collegeville, they saw the Bears rally from a double-digit deficit in the second half to come back for the win. Earlier last season, Travis Moore (pictured), converted a four-point play with less than three seconds remaining to defeat the eventual Centennial Conference Champions in Chestertown. Will the Shoremen again give the Bears, the heavy favorites to repeat as the league's top team, all they can handle?

12/18 at Navy - The Shoremen make one of their shortest road trips of the season as they head to Annapolis to take on the Division I Midshipmen. The two teams last met two years ago when Washington held a pair of early leads and was within 10 points at halftime before Navy pulled away for a 95-66 win.

1/7 v. Johns Hopkins - The Blue Jays will be looking for revenge after the Shoremen defeated Hopkins for the first time in over five years last February.

2/15 v. Swarthmore - The next-to-last game of the regular season could prove to be vital if the Shoremen are in the hunt for a Centennial Conference Playoff spot. The home court advantage in this series has been vital of late; over the past four years the Shoremen are 3-1 against the Garnet at home, but 0-4 on the road.

Hitting the Hardwood, Part 1

The 2005-06 Washington College basketball seasons tip off Friday as the Shorewomen open at Virginia Wesleyan's Tyson Tip-Off Classic and the Shoremen get things started at the first-ever Pride of Maryland Tournament. Today, we'll take a look at some of the highlights the schedule has in store for the Shorewomen. Tomorrow, we'll look at the Shoremen's schedule.

11/18 at Virginia Wesleyan - Season openers are always interesting, but this one has a special twist. Washington's roster features eight freshmen and one transfer, sophomore guard Elise Conway (pictured), who started at the point last season for - you guessed it - Virginia Wesleyan.

12/6 v. Haverford - After playing their first five games of the season away from home, including their first two conference games, the Shorewomen make their Cain Athletic Center debut against the Fords. Washington won the Chestertown game between the two schools last year in double overtime.

12/10 v. Muhlenberg & 1/7 @ Gettysburg - Last season, Washington lost its first game against Muhlenberg by 39 points and its first game against Gettysburg by 27 points. The second time around, the Shorewomen almost pulled off upsets, falling to the Mules by just six points and to the Bullets by five points. This year's first meetings with the two schools will help show how far Washington has come.

1/18 v. McDaniel - The first of the Shorewomen's two games this season against the defending Centennial Conference Champions.

WOTS to Baltimore Makes Headlines

The announcement that this year's "War on the Shore" for the Charles B. Clark Cup between the Washington College and Salisbury University men's lacrosse teams has made local headlines. An article appeared in the Kent County News about the move last week. Today's edition of the Salisbury Daily Times features an extensive piece on the topic.

Here's a quote from one Shoremen alum that ran in the article:
"You sort of go in before you step on the field as a freshman and know that's the feature game of your season," said John Timken, a 2003 graduate of Washington College who played midfield for the Shoremen for four years and was a captain his senior year. "No matter either team's record or anything else, it's going to be a battle to the end. It's intense. There's a great deal of passion on both sides, and it's fun as a player to make your own mark on the series."

On The Road With Swimming

I just got back from a road trip with our swim teams for the season-opening meet at Gettysburg. While the overall results weren't in our favor - see the stories on the WC Athletics Home Page - we had some strong performances.

To pass the time on the way up and on the way back, the teams watched Coach Carter and Friday Night Lights. Sandwiches from Subway were pre-ordered for after the meet so our student-athletes could enjoy the Dashboard Confessional concert at the LFC tonight.

Here are a couple pics I snapped before today's meet - a group photo and a shot of head coach Kim Lessard getting the swimmers ready for the meet.

Everyone Into the Pool!

The Washington College swim teams dive into their 2005-06 meet schedule this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Gettysburg College. Junior Colin Soper and sophomores Alex Thomas and Brandon Becker are among the Shoremen's top returning swimmers, while 2004 All-American and two-time Academic All-American junior Ally Simons (pictured), junior Liz Shoemaker, junior Caitlin Auger, and sophomore Nicole Ludwig are among the Shorewomen's top returners.

Here's a quick glance at some of the highlights of this year's swim schedule:

11/9 v. Salisbury: The WC swimmers open their home schedule. The swimming version of the Eastern Shore rivalry has traditionally gone in Washington's favor. The Shorewomen are 18-1 all-time against the Sea Gulls, while the Shoremen are 14-1 all-time against Salisbury.

11/16 v. Franklin & Marshall: The Shorewomen and Diplomats have a competitive all-time series, with the Shorewomen leading, 8-7. The Shoremen nearly upset F&M a year ago, falling by just seven points.

2/8 v. Swarthmore: The final dual meet of the season for the Shoremen and Shorewomen pits them against the Garnet Tide. Last year's men's portion of the meet was decided in the final event, which went Swarthmore's way. On the women's side, Swarthmore ended a five-meet losing streak to the Shorewomen with a win last year.

2/17-19 Centennial Conference Championships (at Franklin & Marshall): Enough said.
